Sailing

Sailing out on a broad reach,
Then goose rigged;
Close to the wind my lad, with sails lashed tight;
Cutting a cruel wake on the briny.

  1. I wrote this poem after a sailing adventure in Exmouth Harbour, Devon, with a friend who had just bought a boat. I say adventure, because when we boarded her we discovered the engine wouldn't start, so we had to sail out of the busy harbour and back again. With some tricking manoeuvring we got clear of the nest of moored boats, and avoided colliding with other traffic to reach the relative safety of open water.
